Blast Medic Is Statistically Broken — A Steelman Proof

Claim: The Blast Medic (healer spec) sustains more damage mitigation than any DPS class can output under perfect conditions. Exactly one talent in the game (Anti-Heal, warrior tree) brings the math back to parity — which makes that single talent a mandatory tax on every damage dealer and the healer unbeatable against anyone who didn't pay it. Balance that hinges on one obligatory pick is broken by design.

Method: Every disputable assumption below is resolved in favor of the DPS, not the healer. If the healer still wins under those conditions, the conclusion is robust. Numbers taken from in-game values: mastery trees of all 7 classes, the full talent list (8 categories), tier 3 weapons, and the artifact system. Level 5 abilities, 200 primary stat on both sides (Heal and Shield Power for the healer, Attack Power / Spell Power for the DPS).

Assumptions granted to the DPS side:

  • 100% auto-attack uptime (no kiting, no blind, no fear, no smoke — even though the healer has all four)
  • Every skillshot hits, every cooldown used on cooldown, Frenzy/stealth/stance setup pre-completed for free
  • Only 25% armor / magic resist mitigation on targets (low for a mid-game frontline)
  • Q (Bouncy Bomb) has a 3.5-second cooldown at max level — fast enough for 17 casts a minute — but its mana cost (135 per cast) limits sustained use to ~6 casts per minute, and the ledger uses that mana-limited number; the healer also contributes zero damage of their own
  • Amplification calculated with Adaptive Boost mode 1 only (+30% healing/shielding); the Upgraded Firmware mastery node (+25% effects / +15% Heal and Shield Power) excluded despite being affordable
  • Equal primary stat (200 both sides) — itself a concession to the DPS: tier 3 main-stat rolls give 40 Heal and Shield Power per basket versus 20 Attack Power or 30 Spell Power (max 3 baskets per main stat). At equal gear the healer's primary stat runs 1.3–2× the DPS's; 200–250 Heal and Shield Power is trivial to reach while an Attack Power class sits near half that

Lemma 1 — Permanent party shield is baseline, by arithmetic

W (Flashbang Shield Generator): the shield lasts 20 seconds, the cooldown is 11 seconds (level 5). 20 > 11. Therefore 100% shield uptime on the whole party is not a build, not a combo — it is the default state of every Blast Medic, at 0 mastery points, from one basic ability that also blinds every enemy in the area for 2 seconds on the same cast.

No other ability in any of the 6 other trees provides a permanent party-wide defensive layer. The closest analogue (Shaman's water totem) requires 5 elemental charges built through ~15 auto-attacks, fixed placement, and slow ticks.

Lemma 2 — Shields are worth more than their number

Damage passes through armor / magic resist before reaching a shield. At just 25% mitigation, a 1,550 shield absorbs 2,067 raw damage. Shields also never overheal-waste, and they pre-empt burst. So every shield point below should really be multiplied ×1.33 when compared against DPS raw output — we don't do this in the math below (granted to the DPS side), which means every margin shown is understated.

Lemma 3 — The 60-second ledger

Both sides here are talent-free — mastery kit and weapons only, no talent trees, no implants, no artifacts. (The healer's ×1.3 amplification is their own mastery ability, not a talent.) The talent layer is added for both sides in Lemma 6.

Healer mitigation over 60 seconds (party-targeted, at range, on demand):

  • Shield (W) alone, unamplified: 1,550 × 5.45 casts = 8,455
  • Shield (W) alone, amplified ×1.3: 2,015 × 5.45 = 10,982
  • W + Q heal, unamplified, + ultimate prorated: 8,455 + 859×6 + 1,380×0.6 = 14,437
  • W + Q amplified + ultimate amplified: 10,982 + 1,117×6 + 1,794×0.6 = 18,760

Maximum theoretical DPS output over the same 60 seconds (all cooldowns, all auto-attacks, nothing missed; ×0.75 after armor):

  • Destroyer: ~10,600 abilities + 5,340 auto-attacks ≈ 16,000 raw → ~12,000 lands
  • Ranger: ~8,500 + 6,240 ≈ 14,700 raw → ~11,000 lands
  • Infiltrator: ~7,000 + 5,500 ≈ 12,500 raw → ~9,400 lands

Result:

  • The shield button alone (273 mana per minute) absorbs ~90% of a Destroyer's mathematically perfect minute.
  • The two-button amplified rotation covers 156% of it. Even fully unamplified, 120%.
  • This is with the healer dealing zero damage and the DPS granted perfection. Re-apply Lemma 2 and the real margin is ~2×.

Therefore: no single DPS class can kill through a Blast Medic. Not with perfect play. The math doesn't allow it. Time-to-kill is infinite in any 1v1-plus-healer scenario, and roughly parity even at 2v1 — before counting the healer's blind/fear/stun kit disrupting both attackers.

Lemma 4 — Team scaling is one-directional

The shield covers 5 allies per cast; every DPS burst above is single-target (the AoE portions are minor). In a 5v5, the healer's ledger multiplies by party size; the DPS ledger doesn't. The gap in Lemma 3 is the best case for DPS (tunnel-focusing one target). Every teamfight is worse.

Lemma 5 — The counter list is exhaustive, and it's one talent

Full census of anti-heal / anti-shield mechanics across all six other class trees (both tanks checked: zero anti-heal):

  1. Infiltrator's Assassin's Mark — absorbs 200 + 200% of Attack Power (= 600) of "healing and shielding", −20% for 7 seconds. ✅ Touches shields — the only ability that does. Gate: combat stance, 3 stacked empowered auto-attacks on the shielded target, melee range.
  2. Infiltrator's Stunning Grenade upgrade — target "receives 50% less healing". ❌ Healing only. Gate: fully upgraded node + direct mine hit.
  3. Infiltrator's Interdiction Protocol — roots and silences the caster if a heal or shield is cast on a rooted target. ⚠️ A punish, not a reduction. Gate: node + enemy must heal into a 1.5-second root window.
  4. Ranger's Venomous Infusion upgrade — stacking −10% incoming healing, max −70%, 3-second window. ❌ Healing only. Gate: combo + fully upgraded node + skillshot hit.

Read the wording: entries 2 and 4 — the game's two class heal-reduction effects — say healing, not shielding. The Blast Medic's primary output is shields. Shields bypass every class-kit heal-reduction in the game.

The single ability that touches shields (the Mark) absorbs 600 — against 1,550–2,762 per shield cast, every 11 seconds. It deletes at most ~25–39% of one cast, then requires 3 more empowered melee hits to re-apply — against a class with an area blind, fear mines, a stun, smoke invisibility and a decoy swap.

The talent system adds one more entry — the only real one:

  1. The "Anti-Heal" talent (warrior tree, row 3) — ability hits reduce healing and shield effectiveness by 37.5% (level 1) up to 50% (level 5/5) for 4.5–7 seconds. ✅ The only universal shield counter in the game. Gate: must pick the warrior tree, must pick this over two damage talents in its row, and near-must spend one of only three 5/5 implant slots on it; the debuff applies per target hit.

Conclusion of Lemma 5: at the ability layer the class is uncounterable — one partial, melee-gated absorb on one class. At the talent layer exactly one pick in the entire game touches shields. Run the ledger against it (numbers in Lemma 6): with Anti-Heal the fight becomes merely even; without it the healer is mathematically unbeatable. One class's entire counterplay compressed into one mandatory talent — every damage dealer pays a tree pick, a row pick and an implant-slot pick as an entry fee for the game functioning. That is not counterplay; that is a tax.

Lemma 6 — The talent layer amplifies the healer and arms nobody against it

Census of the full talent list (all 8 categories). Talents that amplify shields/healing, all equippable by the Blast Medic (values at max level):

  • Chrono-Fortification — shield duration +200% → the party shield lasts 60 seconds on an 11-second cooldown
  • Shield Master — shield abilities gain 3 charges, +9% shielding → triple shield casts back-to-back
  • Harmonic Trade-off+35% healing and shielding (the cost is +35% mana on those abilities — and the shield is already the most mana-efficient ability in the game)
  • Luminescent Grace — +20% healing/shielding while mana is above 65%
  • Benevolent Echoes — +27% (maxes instantly — the shield hits 5 unique targets)
  • Focus Healing — +50% when stacked on a focused target
  • Energized Bastion — shielded targets get +20% attack speed for the shield's duration
  • Dynamic Fortress — shielded targets get +20% armor / magic resist for the shield's duration
  • Overflowing Barrier — overhealing converts to a shield
  • Aegis Retribution — critical heals apply a bonus shield
  • Radiant Ascension — using the ultimate grants the party damage reduction for 2.5 seconds
  • Ultima Resonance — ultimate → −50% healing costs for 20 seconds

Count: 12 shield/heal amplifiers on the healer's side. Talents that counter enemy shields: oneAnti-Heal (Lemma 5). Twelve boosters versus one brake.

Talent constraints applied (one talent per row → max 5 per tree, 3 trees; only 3 talents total can be leveled to 5/5 via the 6 implant slots): even under these limits, a legal healer build fits the entire core —

Worked example with exactly that legal build (level-1 amplifiers excluded — conservative):

  • Shield per ally: (110 + 200 Heal and Shield Power) × 1.35 × 1.3 boost mode ≈ 544
  • Per cast (5 allies): ~2,720 — with 2 charges bankable: 5,440 burst
  • Duration: 60 seconds on an 11-second cooldown → shields layered permanently
  • 60-second total from the shield alone: 5.45 × 2,720 ≈ 14,800124% of a perfect Destroyer's minute

Lemma 6 (continued)

Symmetry check — give the DPS their talents too. Best case for a Destroyer: three maxed damage talents (generously: Focused Assault stacking +45% ability damage on a focused target averaged to +25% sustained, plus Healthy Aggression +13% to everything):

  • DPS talented: (10,600 × 1.25 + 5,340) × 1.13 × 0.75 armor ≈ 15,700 lands
  • Healer talented: 14,800 shield + ~6,700 heals + ~1,100 drone ≈ 22,600
  • Ratio: ≈ 1.4× in the healer's favor — nearly unchanged from the talent-free ratio

The ratio survives because percentage damage talents and percentage shield talents scale both sides equally — but the healer's talents also multiply duration (+200%) and charges (+1), for which damage talents have no analogue. There is no talent that makes a Destroyer's ultimate come off cooldown twice.

Now run it against the one counter. The DPS answers with Anti-Heal (warrior tree) — noting that maxing it means giving up one of the three maxed damage talents above:

  • Anti-Heal 5/5 (−50%, costs one maxed damage talent): healer 22,600 → ~11,300 vs DPS ~13,900 → DPS finally wins on paper
  • Anti-Heal level 1 (−37.5%, keeps all three damage talents): healer → ~14,100 vs DPS ~15,700 → paper edge to DPS, erased by imperfect debuff uptime through blind, smoke, fear and decoy swaps
  • No Anti-Heal: healer 22,600 vs DPS 15,700 → healer unbeatable

The entire matchup collapses onto one question: did the damage dealer pay the Anti-Heal tax? Without it the fight is mathematically lost. With it the fight becomes merely even — and only while the debuff is actually maintained, per target, through the most crowd-control-loaded kit in the game. One talent as the difference between "unwinnable" and "fair fight" is the definition of a mandatory pick.

Critically, the scariest talent barely cares about levels: Chrono-Fortification at level 1 is already +100% duration — the party shield lasts 40 seconds on an 11-second cooldown without spending a single implant slot on it.

Energized Bastion + Dynamic Fortress at level 1 still turn the permanent shield into a permanent party-wide +10% attack speed and +10% armor aura — the healer is also a passive offensive buffer.

And the punchline: because Chrono-Fortification multiplies duration, even nerfing the shield's base duration to 6–8 seconds gets multiplied back to 12–24 seconds. The talent layer doesn't just worsen the problem — it hard-counters the most obvious fix.

(Constraints confirmed: 3 trees per character, 5 talents per tree, 3 talents maxable to 5/5 through implants. The DPS side is bound by the same limits — maxing Anti-Heal costs one of their three 5/5 slots, taken away from their own damage talents.)

Lemma 7 — The last counterplay ("kill the healer") is also countered

After Lemmas 1–6, exactly one strategy remains: hard-crowd-control the Blast Medic and burst them down. The character system counters that too.

Tank talent tree (any character picks 3 trees — the healer takes medic + tank + support; values at max level):

  • Stoic Endurance — regenerate 4.5% of maximum health per second while under hard crowd control → negates the "stun the healer" plan directly
  • Iron Will — −40% crowd control duration → same
  • Last Stand100% chance to survive lethal damage + regenerate 25% of maximum health → negates the burst finish
  • Shielded Defense — shield worth 20% of maximum health when taking physical/magic damage → negates the burst opener
  • Juggernaut — +20% maximum health → negates everything
  • Bouncing Back — +40% incoming healing after being critically hit → negates crit-based burst
  • Bulwark / Indomitable — −50% critical damage taken / immunity to critical hits for 8 seconds after being crit → crit-based burst again

(Only 3 talents total reach 5/5, so a real build maxes Stoic Endurance and runs the rest at base level — which still gives 2% of maximum health per second under crowd control, a guaranteed cheat-death (Last Stand is 100% chance at every level), −15% crowd control duration, and 25% critical damage reduction. The point stands at any level distribution: every anti-healer strategy has a dedicated tank-tree answer.)

Itemization asymmetry. Endgame (tier 3) artifacts carry up to 3 free-choice secondary stats; implants carry the main stats (Health, Mana, Attack Power, Spell Power, Armor, Magic Resist, Heal and Shield Power) plus the talent levels (+2 each) that bring the three key talents to 5/5. The healer's offense needs exactly one main stat — Heal and Shield Power — so every remaining main-stat slot goes into Health, Armor and Magic Resist without losing a point of throughput. The secondary slots double-dip too: heals can critically strike, so Magical Crit Chance and Magical Crit Power are direct healing-throughput stats (and with the Aegis Retribution talent, crit heals mint bonus shields on top); Cooldown Reduction shortens the 11-second shield cooldown further, pushing the uptime math from Lemma 1 even deeper; Tenacity directly defuses the stun-and-burst plan; Physical/Magical Damage Decrease rounds out the defense. Every itemization choice the healer makes raises throughput or counters the plan to kill them — usually both. A DPS spends the same slots on crit, penetration and attack speed just to maintain the output baseline from Lemma 3; any defensive pick costs them damage the healer out-mitigates anyway.

And the stat rolls themselves are lopsided: a tier 3 main-stat basket gives 40 Heal and Shield Power, but only 20 Attack Power or 30 Spell Power — the healer's primary stat is literally priced at double an Attack Power class's, per basket, on the same items. Every number in this document assumed stat parity (200 vs 200); on real gear the healer runs 200–250+ while the Attack Power classes trail far behind, which pushes every margin shown here further in the healer's favor. The gap widens with every gear tier.

So the complete picture: the healer out-sustains all damage (Lemma 3), can't be counter-built (Lemmas 5–6), and the fallback plan — focus and kill the healer — runs into a crowd-control-resistant, cheat-death, health-stacked target wearing tank talents and defensive artifacts that cost them nothing (Lemma 7).

Q.E.D. — summary of the proof

  1. Permanent party shields are baseline (Lemma 1) — no points, no combo, no counterplay window.
  2. Each shield point beats each damage point through armor (Lemma 2).
  3. Under assumptions maximally biased toward DPS, one healer's sustained mitigation exceeds any DPS class's theoretical maximum output — the shield alone ≈ 90% of a perfect Destroyer (Lemma 3).
  4. The advantage multiplies with team size (Lemma 4).
  5. The ability layer contains one partial counter on one class — every ability-level heal-reduction reads "healing", never "shielding"; the talent layer contains exactly one universal counter, Anti-Heal (Lemma 5).
  6. The talent layer offers the healer 12 shield/heal amplifiers (up to +200% duration, extra charges, +35% value) against that single brake — and with talents applied to both sides the matchup collapses onto whether the damage dealer picked that one talent: with it the fight is merely even, without it unwinnable. Duration-multiplying talents also pre-counter the obvious duration nerf (Lemma 6).
  7. The fallback strategy — kill the healer — is negated by tank-tree access (regeneration under crowd control, guaranteed cheat death, crit immunity) and by itemization asymmetry: one offensive main stat means defense comes free, while crit secondaries boost healing (heals crit) and Cooldown Reduction deepens the shield uptime (Lemma 7).

A class that cannot be out-damaged by design, is amplified twelve-to-one at the talent layer, cannot be assassinated, and whose only counter is a single mandatory talent pick is broken at every layer of the character system — mastery, talents, and itemization.

Supporting numbers

Healer output detail (Heal and Shield Power = 200, ability level 5):

  • W — Flashbang shield, 5 allies: 5 × (110 + 100% of Heal and Shield Power) = 1,550 per cast (2,015 amplified; 2,762 with Upgraded Firmware), 11-second cooldown
  • Q — Bouncy Bomb heal, 3 allies at −10% per bounce: 317 + 285 + 257 = 859 per cast (1,117 amplified), 3.5-second cooldown; sustained casts are limited by mana, not cooldown
  • Shielding Echo mines, 3 allies: 3 × (50 + 150% of Heal and Shield Power) = +1,050, passive
  • R — Drone on one ally: 460 + 460% of Heal and Shield Power = 1,380 (1,794 amplified) over 20 seconds, 100-second cooldown

The drone's 460% Heal and Shield Power ratio: the highest comparable scaling anywhere else in the game is ~120–150%. With the Omni-Assist upgrade it also grants a full crowd-control cleanse and stun immunity, and runs up to 28 seconds if that node is the one taken to max rank.

DPS burst detail (Attack Power = Spell Power = 200, ability level 5):

  • Destroyer: Charge 340 + Circle Strike 525 + ultimate 620–930 + Battle Frenzy ~1,680 ≈ 3,100 — ultimate on a 60-second cooldown, melee, 10 Frenzy stacks required
  • Ranger: Net Shot 150 + Inferno Arrow 830 + Arrow Rain 260 + Saltation 450 + Blaze Rebounder 1,320 ≈ 3,000 — core on a 40-second cooldown
  • Infiltrator: Ambush 610 + Mine 405 + Carpet Bombing 700 + Daggers 400 + ultimate 510 ≈ 2,600 — stealth + back positioning required

Auto-attack damage per second (tier 3 weapons, average hit × top attack speed, fast archetype): Ranger ~104, Destroyer ~89, Infiltrator ~56–112, Blast Medic ~84.

Mana efficiency (value produced per point of mana spent):

  • Blast Medic shield (amplified): 40.3
  • Shaman Chain Heal: 13.7
  • Destroyer Charge: 7.6
  • Ranger Saltation (ultimate): 3.2

Crowd control on top (cheap mastery nodes, fits in the 26-point healer build):
Blast Medic at base node ranks alone: 2-second area blind (Prolonged Blindness), 2-second fear per mine (Fearsome Mines), 2-second stun (Stunning Transposition), 1.5-second area stun proc (Malfunction), chaining area fear (Fear Cascade) — all on one character. Only one mastery node can sit at max rank at a time (a second maxed node can be bound to the alternate weapon set), but maxing just one pushes a single effect to outlier territory: the blind to 6.2 seconds or the stun to 3.5. Every DPS class: 1–3 seconds of hard crowd control total, mostly tied to ultimates.
